East London man missing at sea after baptism ritual

Police divers will continue their search today for a 31-year-old man missing at sea in East London.

A spokesperson for the NSRI, Craig Lambinon, says the man had gone missing at Bonza Bay Beach during a baptism ritual on the beach.

He says their crew was activated about an hour after the man disappeared. It appears that fellow church members conducted a search before the alarm was raised.

Lambinon says lifeguards raced to the scene to initiate a search and were joined by the NSRI rescue craft.

He says there remains no sign of the missing man despite an extensive sea and shoreline search.
