Five people have been rescued off-shore at the Swartkops River Mouth in Port Elizabeth after two boats capsized while heading out to fish.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon says rescue crews were alerted at about seven o'clock on Tuesday morning, after red distress signal flares were fired.
He says the NSRI rushed to the scene with a rescue craft and picked up the people.
Lambinon says it is believed that the two fishing boats hit semi-submerged objects, possibly floating logs, before they capsized.
One man was suffering from hypothermia and another sustained suspected internal injuries.
