The Department of Water and Sanitation has increased the financial allocation to the Nooitgedacht Low-Level Water Scheme in Nelson Mandela Bay.
In a statement on Thursday, Department spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau, said the allocation to the project has been increased from R117m to R129m for the 2018/2019 financial year.
“The implementation of the project has not gone as fast as planned due to budget cuts by National Treasury and competing needs of the country,” he said.
“The Department fully appreciates the anticipated completion of this project due to the current drought challenges in the Nelson Mandela Bay area. However, due processes and National Treasury prescripts need to be followed,” he added.
Ratau said once completed, the Nooitgedagt Water Project will play a pivotal role in addressing the current water shortages in Nelson Mandela Bay.
