A 68-year-old man died, following a suspected spinal injury he sustained while swimming in the surf with friends in Still Bay.
National Sea Rescue Institute spokesperson, Craig Lambinon said Teyo Smit was rescued from the surf by friends and family who immediately performed CPR while raising the alarm.
Lambinon said despite CPR efforts by NSRI and EMS paramedics, Smit died at the scene.
"NSRI medics continued the CPR it was taken over by Western Cape Government Health EMS paramedics but the despite intensive efforts of CPR the man was declared deceased on scene, sincerest condolences have been expressed by emergency services and NSRI" he said.
The body of the man was taken into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services.
Police have opened an inquest docket.
