Driver license scamsters in the dock

Western Cape police have put the brakes on yet another learner driver license scam with the arrest of the alleged perpetrators - who include a former traffic chief, a traffic official and several driving school owners from the Eastern Cape.

The five suspects were nabbed on Thursday and appeared in court on Friday.

The five suspects, between the ages of 26 and 57, appeared briefly in the Prince Albert magistrates court in the Western Cape and were granted bail of R3000 each.

They include two former Western Cape traffic officials - including an ex Traffic Boss at Prince Albert - as well as three driving school owners from the Eastern Cape.

This brings to 14 the number of suspects arrested in the scam since July last year.

Police believe driver's licenses were issued to applicants in return for payment and kick backs to the implicated driving schools and traffic officials.

They are expected back in court in July.
