A 36-year-old truck driver was killed on impact after his Isuzu truck allegedly rammed into the back of Scania horse and trailer on Monday.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the accident happened at about 2.30 pm on the N2 near St Albans prison.
The driver of the horse and trailer stopped on the N2 as he was experiencing mechanical problems, while outside investigating the problem, the Isuzu ploughed into the back of his stationary vehicle.
The truck was heading back to Humansdorp after delivering eggs in Port Elizabeth.
The driver of the empty Scania truck was on his way to Cape Town and was not injured in the accident.
The driver died on impact while his passenger was trapped for almost three hours.
Naidu says the identity of the passenger is unknown at this stage and the name of the deceased is being withheld until his next of kin has been informed.
