Driver hides car in discreet place before reporting it as stolen

A 46-year-old Kariega man who lied to police about his vehicle being stolen has been arrested and charged with perjury.

Police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, says he visited the police station and claimed that his white Renault vehicle broke down on the R75 and was stolen at 7 pm on Wednesday.

She says the members followed up on different leads and witnesses and the investigation in fact revealed that the car was never stolen.

Swart says the suspect was confronted with the evidence and admitted that he hid his vehicle in a discreet area and fabricated the whole story.

The suspect is expected to appear in the town's Magistrate's Court on Friday.
