An unknown suspect was shot and killed after he robbed a woman who stopped at an accident scene in Gqeberha on Thursday morning.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate IPID says a group of children ran across the N2 near the Kempston Road off-ramp when a motorist travelling in an easterly direction struck one of them who is now in a critical condition in hospital.
IPID spokesperson Grace Langa says the accident caused a traffic jam and one woman, who wanted to know what was going on, got out of her Ford Fiesta and was subsequently accosted by three men who grabbed her cellphone.
An unmarked vehicle with members of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) on board was also in the traffic jam and they saw what was happening.
Langa says the members jumped out of their vehicle and chased after the suspects who ran towards the so called brown flats.
A TRT member pursued after one of the suspects who turned around and pointed a firearm at the officer.
Langa says the officer fired a warning shot followed by a second shot which killed the suspect instantly.
A post mortem will be held on Friday and IPID is investigating the incident.
