Dozens of shacks demolished near airport in East London

BCM officials demolished over a 100 shacks near the Airport in East London this week.

Buffalo City Metro

The Buffalo City Metro has demolished 107 illegally built structures on a piece of land in the vicinity of the King Phalo airport in East London.

The demolition follows another one in September, in which at least 26 shacks were removed.

Buffalo City Spokesperson Samnkelo Ngwenya, says land invasions are hampering government efforts to expand the airport.

Ngwenya says the municipality has a duty to protect land earmarked for development.

"The Municipality is committed to executing court orders and will demolish illegal structures and remove land invaders. The demolishing includes BCM carting off poles, zinc sheets, and confiscating them," he said.

Ngwenya said Tuesday's joint operation was carried out by the BCM human settlements [department], our law enforcement services, and the SA police.

No arrests were made and those in the vicinity were warned.
