Toy gun robbery leads to high-speed chase and arrests in Gqeberha

Three men are in police custody following an armed robbery at a shop near Greenbushes, West of Gqeberha.

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says on Tuesday afternoon, a suspect entered a shop situated along Old Cape Road.

She says he made a purchase and later returned with two accomplices who then threatened staff with a firearm, ordering them to lie on the ground.

The suspects helped themselves to electronics, baby care products, cash, groceries and two cell phones with a total value of approximately R18 000.

Captain Janse van Rensburg says the men locked the complainant and his customers inside the shop before fleeing in a blue Toyota LDV.

She says the complainant alerted a child outside who flagged down a patrolling SAPS vehicle from Thornhill.

Members immediately requested assistance from Kabega SAPS and when the car was spotted a high-speed chase ensued.

Captain Janse van Rensburg says the suspects were forced to stop on Cape Road close to Mission Road where they jumped out, fleeing in different directions.

Police managed to arrest all three aged between 21 and 32.

The gun used in the armed robbery turned out to be a toy.
