Fire fighters in Middelburg in the Eastern Cape are reportedly battling to contain a blaze at a local perfume factory which is believed to have been caused by a massive explosion on Monday morning.
Algoa FM News has learnt that scores of people have been streaming to the Willhelm Stahl Hospital for treatment following the blast which was felt throughout the town.
People have been asked to stay clear of the vicinity of Rolfe Laboratories.
Police spokesperson, captain Stefani Smith, says more than 30 people have been admitted to hospital with burn wounds, ranging from serious to not so serious.
This was also confirmed by Eastern Cape Health Department spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo.
"We can confirm that we are treating at least 34 patients from an explosion in town many patients will be transferred to a hospital in Port Elizabeth . We still expect more patients. Authorities are not allowing anybody near the factory" he said
