A dolphin which was stranded at Paradise Beach in Jeffreys Bay was rescued and assisted to get back into the sea on Tuesday.
The 2.5-metre mammal was beached at the Botha Street slipway at Paradise Beach, and Greg Hofmeyer from Bay World and the SA Stranding Network requested the assistance of the National Sea Rescue Institute.
NSRI Station Commander at Jeffreys Bay, Rieghard Janse van Rensburg, says they sent a rescue craft to the scene. When they arrived, members of the local neighbourhood watch and the community were taking care of the dolphin, under the watchful expert eye of Malcolm Logan of the SA Stranding Network.
Janse van Rensburg says the dolphin was secured into a carrying canvas and moved about 100 metres to the waiting sea rescue craft. It was then taken about one kilometre out to sea and released.
"The dolphin swam away strongly", Janse van Rensburg said, adding that they were cautiously optimistic that it had survived.
