Do's and Don'ts for New years eve in East London

Buffalo City Metro says all its plans are in place for the New Year.

Spokesperson, Keith Ngesi, says the Metro is aligning itself with the 2013 theme, which is, Rave Responsibly.

He says traffic service unit will apply a zero tolerance approach this festive season particularly on New Year's day.

He says between the First and 29th of December, 140 people had been arrested for drunken driving, five were arrested for reckless and negligent driving, 1-thousand-710 were caught for speeding by camera.

Ngesi says four people were taken into custody for speeding.

He says East London's beaches will be closely monitored on New Year's Day.

There will be no open fires allowed at all beaches and the fire department will inspect fire made only in designated area as per Fire Act. People who bring gas stoves will have to also bring along fire extinguishers and failure to do so will result to their equipment being confiscated.

There will be no permits requested from the Beach goers in the Eastern Beach, but the volume of traffic will be highly regulated. Four (4) tow trucks will be on standby to remove all the vehicles parked illegally especially on the driveways of private properties.

Residents of Bonza Bay will have to be in possession of a utility account like water & lights or a form of ID to verify they are residing in the area. Day visitors will be allowed in a "first come first served basis". When the area is full or reached capacity NO more vehicles will be permitted.
Our beaches will be guarded by a minimum of 4 life guards and a maximum of six life guards. The Metro has also purchased a Jet Ski to assist when we have an emergency. The Jet Ski will be stationed at Orient Beach.

Marina Glen (the popular e Buhlanti) will also be closely monitored - no alcohol will be allowed out of the premises and police will be stationed inside to make sure that people enjoy themselves safely. Emergency services will be on standby and Law enforcement officers will be visible. SAPS will deploy its officers across the beaches and a chopper will do hourly rounds over all our beaches.
