Chris Hani District Municipality says it has learnt with astonishment of a decision by disgruntled workers, attached to water services in the Inkwanca local municipality, to disconnect water services to Molteno and surrounding areas.
Communications Manager, Thobeka Mqamelo says reports received by the district municipality indicate that the discontent is due to non-payment of salaries by the local municipality for some water services staff since March 2014.
He says a service provider has been dispatched to the area to ensure that the closed water valves are opened for water to run.
Mqamelo says they have also requested support from the police to escort the service provider and provide 24- hour security at the plant and to ensure that water service are not interrupted.
He says accessibility of basic services such as water is a priority of the district municipality and the situation in Molteno is closely monitored.
