The Eastern Cape government has imposed an intervention plan on the troubled Amathole District Municipality, after indicating that it is in a dire financial crisis.
Earlier this week, the Municipality reversed a decision not to pay salaries to its staff due to financial constraints.
Provincial government spokesperson, Mvuyisiwekhaya Sicwetsha says the intervention is in line with the constitution, which permits the government to impose a financial recovery plan to ensure the municipality meets its legislative obligations.
He says they have established a political workstream, including the Finance and Cooperative Governance MEC's, to oversee the process.
