Disaster team dispatched to Alice following heavy rains

A young child is in hospital after being hit by lightning during a storm which lashed Alice in the Eastern Cape on Sunday.

The Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality says a woman was also injured when a structure collapsed.

Municipality spokesperson Sivenkosi Mtiya says officials will be visiting the injured in hospital on Monday.

Meanwhile, a disaster team from the Amathole District Municipality has been dispatched to the town of Alice.

The town was flooded following the rain with several homes being destroyed.

The overflow of the rain brought the town to a standstill as vehicles could barely move from one place to the next.

The team will assess the extent of the damage on Monday.
