The owner of a game reserve outside Cradock in the Eastern Cape is offering a substantial reward after two white rhino were poached and killed on the reserve this week.
A four year-old bull calf and its mother, who was pregnant, were found dead on the Tam Safaris Game Reserve on Friday with their horns sawn off.
They had both been darted and tranquilized.
Reserve owner Irvine Tam told AlgoaFM News that they are offering a 400-thousand reward for information that may lead to an arrest and conviction.
Tam said they were also concerns for the well being of a 9-month old rhino calf that was orphaned in the attack - and that they'll be keeping a close eye on its condition over the next few days.
He says when they found the calf that survived, it was full of darts and had clearly been shot by the poachers as they tried to keep it at bay while they dehorned its mother and sibling they had just killed.
Provincial police spokesperson colonel Sibongile Soci appealed to anyone who may be able to assist to contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Herman Hansen of the Cradock Stocktheft Unit on 082 441 3560
