Derailment caused by heat?

The Railway Safety Regulator says an in-depth investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of a train derailment in the Eastern Cape on Saturday.

A locomotive on a Shosholoza Meyl long distance train from Johannessburg to East London, derailed at Gaika Station, which is 70 kilometres between East London and Queenstown.
Inspectors were on site and preliminary findings indicate that the derailment might have been caused by what is known as a rail kickout, which is a result of the expansion and contraction of the rail due to changes in temperature.

No fatalities or injuries were reported and all passengers had to be provided with alternative transport to their destination.

Damage was caused to the track and overhead electrical wire.
