The Department of Correctional Services says it plans on reporting the prison brawl, involving Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, to the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services.
The department's spokesman, Singabakho Nxumalo, said Pistorius was involved in an altercation with another inmate allegedly over the use of a public phone in the special care unit last week Wednesday.
Nxumalo said the brawl took place at the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre where both inmates are detained.
He said Pistorius sustained a slight injury.
"The report has it that there was a minor bruise sustained by one inmate, but even if it's a call it 2% bruise, it's not supposed to take place and as the department, we are taking this matter seriously," he said.
Nxumalo said the matter will be reported to the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services which ensures that constitutional rights of inmates are not compromised.
"The investigation will really tell what went wrong, what triggered the whole thing. Those found to be in the wrong will then face necessary corrective measures," he said.
Pistorius is currently serving a 13-year sentence for the murder of his girlfriend‚ Reeva Steenkamp
