Department makes promise to pay pathology workers in September

The National Education Health & Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) says the health forensic pathology services workers will not work overtime or even be on standby until consultative processes are concluded.

The health workers in parts of the Eastern Cape have embarked on a wildcat strike over unpaid overtime.

Provincial Nehawu spokesperson, Mlu Ncapayi, says the union met with the Department of Health on Wednesday.

Ncapayi says the Department explained that it was unable to process payments on time but promised to make payments on the 7th of September.

He says the department pleaded with the workers to work overtime in the meantime but he says Nehawu will first have to consult its members.

Ncapayi says the next meeting with the department will be on Monday.

He says staff will still work their required eight hours a day but will not participate in any overtime or standby duties.

The Department of Health said they would issue a statement before noon.
