Port Elizabeth police have opened an inquest docket, after a decomposed body of a child was found by members of the community in Malabar Extention 6.
Spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says community members were walking in an open field near a dam on Sunday when they made the discovery.
"Due to the state of decomposition, the identification of the child cannot be determined at this stage," she said.
Janse van Rensburg said a post mortem will be done on the remains to determine the cause of death.
Several community members believe the remains to be that of missing 9-year-old Recolin Witbooi, who went missing three months ago.
This will only be to confirmed once a DNA test is conducted.
