Death toll climbs following head-on collision en route to graduation

The death toll in Tuesday morning's head-on collision between a Toyota Avanza and a truck on the R-63 near Alice in the Eastern Cape, has risen to five.

Three people died at the scene, and two died later in hospital.A group of nurses were on their way to their graduation ceremony at the University of Fort Hare, when they collided head-on with a truck, shortly after 6am.

Spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Department of Health's Siyanda Manana expressed his condolences to the families.He said three nurses died at the scene, while a fourth nurse and the driver of the Avanza later died in hospital.

The Nurses were affiliated with the Lilitha College of Nursing in Lusikisiki.
