Deadline set by EC pathology workers on go-slow

It has been two weeks since Eastern Cape forensic pathology workers went on a go-slow over non-payment of overtime by the Department of Health.

The health workers across several districts of the province have refused to work overtime or be on standby since last Monday over non-payment of three months of overtime owed to them.

While the Department of Health assured the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union that payment would be made by the 7th of this month, workers have still not budged.

Nehawu Provincial Secretary Mlu Ncapayi says the union is set to meet with MEC of Health Nomakhosazana Meth and the department's management on Tuesday 6 September.

He says if the overtime payments reflect on the 7th then workers will return to taking calls after their working hours.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health has placed the blame on the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) who apparently delayed in approving the overtime.

Health Department spokesperson Yonela Dekeda said if overtime payment is above 30 % of their salaries an approval is needed to be made by DPSA.

Dekeda said the department would make use of contingency measures that have been put in place to ensure forensic pathology services do not grind to a halt.

Last week, Nehawu slammed the department for the lack of transparency and told AlgoaFM News that there are no private pathologist services in the Province.

Ncapayi said that if the department could pay for contingency services then it should be able to resolve the overtime payment issues.
