Local authorities in the Eastern Cape have until October 30th to submit Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management proposals to the Department of Energy.
Metrominute reports that the selected municipalities will receive grants for the planning and implementation of energy efficient technologies in areas such as traffic signals, street lighting, municipal buildings, water purification and pumping plants.
In its request for proposals from municipalities, the department says the National Energy Strategy has set a target of 12 percent final energy demand reduction by 2015.
The Energy Department says the goal of the programme is for municipalities to reduce their electricity bills by optimising energy use, improving service delivery and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
