Daylight robbery for airtime, two phones and cigarettes

Police in Gqeberha are searching for several suspects who fled an accident scene shortly after a robbery in Walmer on Tuesday.

Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says at about 4 pm the complainant was inside his shop at 6th Avenue in Walmer when five suspects entered.

She says one man had a gun and forced the owner into the kitchen.

Colonel Naidu says he opened the door 10 minutes later and was informed by a customer that the suspects had fled with their loot.

They stole two phones, airtime, cash and cigarettes before fleeing in a vehicle.

A partial registration number of the vehicle was taken and officers spotted it in New Brighton.

Colonel Naidu says when they saw the police, the one suspect, aged 24, jumped out of the moving vehicle and was chased by police and arrested.

His accomplices also abandoned the Suzuki which eventually crashed into a stationary vehicle.

Naidu says the vehicle was involved in another robbery in Kabega Park earlier in the day.

Police confiscated a pistol and suspected stolen goods.
