The student organisation DASO has taken responsibility for Monday morning's protest action at the Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth.
Students blocked access to North and South campus shortly after 7 am.
NMU said they were made aware of the disruption of classes and acts of intimidation on other campuses which they described as totally unacceptable.
"Students and staff are encouraged to liaise with their lecturers and line managers to assess whether or not classes could continue or if alternative arrangements could be made," it said
DASO published a detailed list of their grievances and outcomes of their meeting with management on their Facebook page on Sunday.
The issues include accommodation concerns where students were being evicted on campus, students not receiving their funds to purchase books and food and general concerns about the shuttle services to campus, which they described as poor.
DASO said it was clear to them that NMU management and the SASCO led SRC do not understand the struggles of students.
They called upon all students "to be ready on the ground" as it was high time to "take the matter to the streets.
