Dagga bust in Grahamstown on first day of Arts Festival


A 37-year old foreign national has been arrested by Grahamstown police for being in possession of a large amount of dagga.

Police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender says members of the Grahamstown Highway patrol were conducting a vehicle check point on the N2 opposite the Settlers Monument on Thursday afternoon, and stopped a long distance bus that was travelling towards Port Elizabeth.

She says on searching the bus they found two large brown suitcases containing dagga with a street value of nearly R110 000. Govender says a man from Tanzania was arrested, and will appear in the Grahamstown Magistrates court soon on a charge of dealing in dagga.

Meanwhile police in Grahamstown are out in full force for the National Arts Festival which started on Thursday.

Govender says police members will be patrolling on foot, in vehicles as well as mounted patrols.Static police points have also been established in High Street, Settlers Monument, Church Square, Fiddlers as well as the Village Green where people can report any criminal incidents.
