DA welcomes probe into Mandela money scandal

The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape has welcomed the decision by the Public Protector to investigate alleged maladministration of funds allocated by the Bhisho Government to various municipalities for the memorial and funeral service of former president Nelson Mandela.

Provincial leader, Atholll Trollip, says its quite outrageous that certain people in government and the ANC leadership saw fit to use the passing of Nelson Mandela as an opportunity to help themselves to public funding.

Trollip has also been asking awkward questions of Premier Phumulo Masualle after an amount of R250 000 had been deposited into his bank account related to the matter.

He returned the money, alleging that people were trying to sabotage him ahead of his appointment as Eastern Cape premier.

However, Trollip says he wants Masualle to provide a proper account of how the money ended up in his private bank account and what steps will be taken against the person who did the transfer.

He says the Legislature has been blocking attempts to do this allegedly by altering the questions he posed for reply in the House.

"I re-submitted the question and today the Speaker will give a ruling whether I can put the original question. I fear that I will not be allowed to do that, because my re-submission was removed from the question paper. Whatever she says today will determine what further steps I will take" he said
