DA vows to take legal action to protect the interests of NMB residents

The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape says it has written to the Speaker of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality requesting that she calls an urgent council meeting to elect an Executive Mayor, or face legal action.

The party's provincial leader, Nqaba Bhanga says this follows Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Xolile Nqatha's intention to place the Metro under administration.

He says the DA's senior leadership met on Friday evening and a decision was taken that they would revert to the courts in order to protect democracy and the interests of residents.

Bhanga says he requested the Speaker, Buyelwa Mafaya to call a meeting to elect a Mayor and appoint a competent and qualified Acting City Manager on or before Tuesday.

He says MEC Nqatha highlighted the ANC-led coalition’s inability and unwillingness to elect a Mayor, the appointment of the unqualified Mvuleni Mapu as Acting City Manager, and National Treasury's decision to withhold R800-million in grant funding as reasons for levelling the threat of administration.
