The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape says the province's MEC for Environmental Affairs, Mcebisi Jonas, should intervene and act immediately to curb the spread of the highly infectious and deadly African Horse Sickness, that has already claimed more than 20 Eastern Cape horses in the last few days.
DA-MPL, John Cupido says for the moment, the outbreak of the disease has only affected the Komga, Kei Mouth and Morgan's Bay areas.
"African Horse sickness is a highly infectious non contagious viral disease that affects all horses, mules and donkeys and it has a mortality rate of 70-90%, through the animal diseases act NR 35 of 1984, African horse sickness has been declared a State controlled disease which empowers the State to implement measures to control it. It is very important that the MEC intervenes immediately and that the department gets involved to keep it from spreading to the rest of the province" Cupido said.
