The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape said it was sad to announce the passing of former Provincial Leader, Eddie Trent, who has died at the age of 80.
The party’s leader in the EC Legislature, Bobby Stevenson, said Trent died of natural causes on Thursday evening.
“A political giant in the history of our province has fallen. Eddie fought for justice for all and non-racialism, and was both a bridge builder and a nation builder,” said Stevenson, who worked with Trent since 1983.
Stevenson said Trent had come from a political family who saw service in Parliament and in the Nelson Mandela Bay council.
His father-in-law was a former MP and mayor of Port Elizabeth and his late wife, Elizabeth Trent, was the leader of the opposition in the Nelson Mandela Bay council.
The former Provincial MPL and Member of Parliament had a long innings in opposition politics, having served as a public representative in various capacities from 1981 until 2009.
Nelson Mandela Bay mayor, and current DA provincial leader, Nqaba Bhanga, said: “Eddie served the people of the Eastern Cape and Nelson Mandela Bay with distinction.”
