DA lays criminal charge related to Pikoli report

The Democratic Alliance in Nelson Mandela Bay says its had laid a criminal charge in respect of allegations contained in an audit report by former National Prosecuting Authority boss, Vusi Pikoli into municipal affairs.

DA caucus leader in Council, Leon de Villiers, says the failure of Mayor Benson Fihla to make the report public as well as the City Manager's failure to act decisively on the matter is indicative of the prevailing culture of corruption and mismanagement that runs through the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

He says the Pikoli Report details wasteful expenditure of R18 million ; R5.1 million of which was siphoned from the public purse to pay for a concert that never took place.

De Villiers says the report suggests some criminal activity and it is now up to the directorate of public prosecutions to take the matter further.

"The Pikoli report has been completed in March this year and the mayor and the acting municipal manager have refused to take decisive action on it. When we take the oath of office, part of that oath is that we need to report anything when we suspect a crime has been committed and since the mayor failed to do this, I felt compelled to do it"
