DA lashes out at violent municipal strike in East London

The Democratic Alliance said protesting Buffalo City municipal employees caused massive damage to infrastructure in East London and King Williams Town during protests this week.

The party's Kevin Mileham said on Saturday that even though they may have legitimate complaints, the impasse with the Municipality must be dealt with differently.

He said the strike by members of the South African Municipal Workers Union in the Metro, which started on Tuesday, escalated to acts of arson and widespread littering on a grand scale by Friday.

"Water and electricity supply to parts of the city have been interrupted after water pumps and electricity boxes in the King William's Town area were set alight," he said.

Mileham said electricity sub-stations and the traffic department's learner licence centre in Braelyn, suffered massive fire damage.

The DA has called on Buffalo City executive mayor, Xola Pakati and his administration to sit down and negotiate with the SAMWU leadership.
