DA in bid to unseat Buffalo City mayor over costly strike

The Democratic Alliance will be attempting to unseat Buffalo City mayor, Xola Pakati, over his "failure to demonstrate political leadership" during the recent municipal strike.

DA MP, Kevin Mileham, said they would be tabling a motion of no-confidence in Pakati as well as City Manager, Andile Sihlahla.

He said to date no one has been held responsible for the damage caused to municipal infrastructure, the loss of income by businesses, or the huge impact the strike has had on residents.

On Thursday, Mayor Pakati said that they had reached an agreement with striking members of the South Africa Municipal Workers Union and the trade union Imatu to end the strike, but at a cost of R200m to the Metro's ratepayers.

He also apologised for the inconvenience caused by the strike vowing that all municipal services would be restored from this weekend.

But, Mileham has accused Pakati and Sihlahla of giving in to what he said was "blackmail" by the unions.

He also said that SAMWU must be held liable for all damage caused during the strike, whether by their members or not.
