The Democratic Alliance is calling for urgent government intervention in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, citing the “systemic collapse” of the Municipality under Executive Mayor, Mongameli Bobani.
DA federal chairperson, Athol Trollip, on Wednesday said that the “ANC/EFF/UDM coalition of corruption”, has forced them to call on the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr. Zweli Mkhize, to urgently intervene.
He said this intervention should be in terms of section 154 of the Constitution which he said would bring some form of stability to Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality and provide the Minister with much-needed insight into “the current dysfunctional administration of the Metro.”
“Under Mayor Bobani and his coalition of corruption, the Metro has seen a massive decline in its financial stability and its ability to deliver basic services. The Metro is also riddled with corruption and acts of criminality,” Trollip added.
He also announced that he had laid additional charges against Mayor, Mongameli Bobani and acting city manager Pieter Neilsen over what he said were unlawful decisions they had recently taken.
Here he referred to the decision to terminate the contract with a legal firm Gray Moodliar, which had been appointed and mandated to conduct disciplinary inquiries and instituting civil claims against NMB officials and service providers implicated in IPTS irregularities.
“The DA is aware that one of the cases that Cllr Bobani doesn’t want to reach court is the investigation into two companies, Heerkos, and Le Roux Inc, which collected more than R25 million from the Municipality without delivering any services. It is alleged that Mayor benefitted from the contracts given to these companies,” Trollip said.
