DA calls for snap debate on position of Metro acting municipal manager

The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape says the continued appointment of the acting municipal manager of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, Themba Hani, is unlawful from today.

That's because a resolution adopted by the Metro Council in March stated that Hani's contract would terminate today or upon the appointment of a municipal manager, whichever occurs first.

DA MPL, Dacre Haddon, says he's asked the Speaker of the Legislature for a snap debate on the matter.

He says Hani's continued appointment as acting municipal manager is illegal as certain procedures have not been followed.

However, mayoral spokesperson, Luncedo Njezula, says the Municipality cannot be left with a vacuum.

"In law it is not admissible to have an institution without a municipal manager and therefore what the executive mayor has articulated is that Mr Themba Hani will continue as acting municipal manager until such time that there is a council meeting which will then make a pronouncement on the way forward on the issue of the position of the municipal manager " Njezula said.
