The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape has called for criminal charges to be laid against municipal workers who invaded the Nelson Mandela Metro's council chambers on Wednesday.
Protesting Samwu members brought proceedings to a halt when they entered the chambers, and, for a while, held councillors against their will by not allowing them to leave.
The council invasion was linked to a pay dispute which the Municipality says has now been resolved.
But, DA leader in the Bhisho legislature, Bobby Stevenson, says what happened, was unacceptable in a democracy.
"I believe criminal charges need to be laid against the workers that invaded the legislative arm of government when they were engaged in a sitting. This was not just an invasion of a building or a room but an assault on democracy, unless action is taken we are on the road to anarchy and this cannot be tolerated" he said.
