Chamber welcomes lengthy jail terms for rapists

The Border-Kei Chamber of Business has welcomed the lengthy jail sentences imposed on two men who raped and robbed two Swedish women on an East London beach last year.

However, chamber executive director Les Holbrook has lamented the length of time it had taken for the case to be finalised.

Holbrook says such crimes tarnish the reputation of the region and counteracts efforts to sustain the tourism sector in Buffalo City.

Simpiwe Wayizi was sentenced yesterday to 24 years in jail for rape and 17 years for robbery.

His co-accused Asenathi Bonani was jailed for 18 year for rape and 15 years for robbery.
