Cyclist killed by speeding suspects

A cyclist has died after being struck by a speeding vehicle driven by alleged hijackers in the Sundra Settlement in Mpumalanga.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala says the drama unfolded at 9.30 on Monday morning when two Pakistani Nationals were pulled over by four suspects in a silver Toyota Corolla on the N12, direction Witbank.

He says the men tried to hijack their vehicle but the commotion was spotted by private security guards who were in the vicinity.

Brigadier Mohlala says they responded to the scene and a shootout ensued.

He says the guards killed two suspects on the scene while their two accomplices got back in their vehicle to flee the scene.

A high-speed chase ensued that resulted in the suspect striking a 30-year-old cyclist on the road.

The man, who is yet to be identified, died on the scene.

Brigadier Mohlala says after the crash, the two men abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot into the bushes.

He says police confiscated two unlicensed firearms from the deceased suspects and have since established that the Toyota they were driving in was stolen in Kempton Park in February this year, before being fitted with false number plates.

The suspects are still at large.
