Critically injured PE 'hijacker' responsive and talking

A hijacking suspect who is currently under police guard in a Port Elizabeth Hospital has started communicating with police.

The man, believed to be in his twenties, hijacked a Volkswagen Polo in Parliament-street on Friday morning, before speeding down Target Kloof, causing an horrific accident.

He first hit a lamp pole at high speed before colliding with a Nissan SUV and an oncoming truck.

The hijacker was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after being freed from the wreckage with the Jaws of Life.

Captain Rheeder says the occupants of the white Nissan SUV were a couple in their early forties and their 15-year-old daughter.

The woman, whose name is known to Algoa FM, got in touch via Telegram to say that they were battered and bruised following Friday's accident but all okay.

Rheeders says the suspect is responsive and has started to communicate with police.

They are investigating a case of highjacking and reckless and negligent driving.
