The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape said the only way to combat the scourge of sex for jobs, is to criminalise it as a matter of urgency.
The party's Georgina Faldtman, said trading sexual favours for jobs has found a foothold in the province adding that women-headed households are vulnerable to this.
She said she visited Reeston in East London on Wednesday where interactions with community members revealed that women have been approached to sleep with men to get jobs, particularly within the Expanded Public Works Programme.
“This EPWP sex for jobs scandal follows a week after the DA uncovered a sex for jobs debacle in Komani, formerly Queenstown,” Faldtman said.
She said desperate women are being subjected to abuse in order to ensure EPWP jobs.
“Government must, as a matter of urgency, criminalise sex for jobs interviews. The only way we will combat the scourge of carpet interviews is if we deal swiftly and decisively with each and every perpetrator,” she said.
