The Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Nqhaba Bhanga has been accused of vandalising municipal property.
This is according to Patriotic Alliance Councillor, Marlon Daniels, who laid a criminal charge against the Mayor on Tuesday.

Daniels opened a case at the Humewood police station after the Metro bulldozed the concrete braai stands along the beachfront over the weekend.

He told his followers on Facebook that the braai area was particularly popular amongst people from the Northern Areas who have been enjoying the facilities for years.

Daniels said nobody in the Metro was consulted before this area was bulldozed and according to him, the correct council procedures were not followed.

The beaches in the Metro were packed this weekend as thousands of revellers flocked to the ocean and braai facilities.

People were also openly drinking in public, leaving glass and rubbish scattered across the beachfront.

Mayor Bhanga said the Metro's beaches would be closely monitored in future, to avoid a re-occurrence.

He added that resources would be aligned in terms of situational appropriateness.

There have been mixed reactions to the bulldozing incident on social media.
