Criminal case opened after sewage is dumped in Mthatha river

The Department of Water and Sanitation has opened a criminal case against a company who allegedly polluted the Mthatha Dam by discharging sewage into it.

A video and photos of a truck discharging into the dam appeared on social media last week, and subsequently, the incident was reported to the department's offices in Mthatha.

The truck allegedly belongs to Anix Truck Hire.

The department sent environmental officers to the dam on Friday the 19th of July, the same day the video was shared on social media.

Samples of water were taken in three different areas of the dam to conduct a microbiological and chemical analysis of the water in the hope that it would assist police in their investigation.

The Department condemned the incident and said a zero-tolerance approach will be taken against any form of pollution of water resources.
