Crime on the uptick in Gqeberha's Western suburbs

Residents living in the Western Suburbs of Gqeberha have been warned to ensure that their premises are secure as criminals are breaking into houses, while residents are home.

Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says this usually happens during or just after load shedding and members have seen an increase in cases in Rowallan Park, Kunene Park, Kabega Park, Parsonsridge and Westering, especially between 10 pm and 4 am.

She says during the early hours of Thursday morning, a complainant living on Huguenot Street in Kabega Park, was woken by four men in balaclavas.

Colonel Naidu says one was armed with a gun and another with a panga.

She says a shot was fired and the man was struck with the panga on his left arm.

A sliding door was forced open in the robbery and a TV set and phones were stolen.

Police have urged residents to have a re-look at their current security measures, ensure their doors are locked and burglar bars are placed at open windows.

Colonel Naidu says you must never go outside if you hear a noise, like your dogs barking, instead activate your panic alarm or phone the police.
