Cradock without water due to canal blockage

Cradock has been left without water on Friday following a blockage in the raw water canal, which resulted in pumps malfunctioning.

The Chris Hani District Municipality tweeted that their teams are working on the problem.

It also says that water will be carted by tanker to the town while repair work is underway.

The District Municipality did not say what caused the blockage in the canal but has apologised to residents for the inconvenience.

Meanwhile, locals and businesses in Chris Hani District Municipality have pitched in to help unclog the canal.

The Acting director for engineering services, Moses Shasha, said the community and businesses are working hand in hand with the municipality to unblock the canal.

He said the blockage was caused by leaves and debris after heavy rains and the team has managed to get about 200 litres per second into the GeelBooi storage dam.

Shasha said water would become available in some areas as soon as the water levels are adequate for pumps to start pushing water into the treatment works.
