Police in Beacon Bay, East London, are searching for five men who invaded a smallholding in the early hours of Monday morning.
Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana says the suspects stormed the smallholding shortly after midnight and demanded that the homeowner open the sliding door.
One of the robbers then smashed the window with a crowbar to gain entry.
Brigadier Kinana says the complainant had tried to fight back before being forced to show his attackers to the safe.
They then kicked down a door on realising that there was also a woman in the house.
An undisclosed amount of money was taken from her wallet along with the complainant's ID and passport.
The suspects also took an undisclosed amount of cash from the safe along with two cell phones worth about R50 000.
Brigadier Kinana says a case of house robbery is under investigation.
No arrests have been made.
