A cold front sweeping the country signalled the arrival of mid-winter with snowfall in some parts.
The SA Weather Service says more snow is expected on Saturday over the high areas of the Eastern Cape, Lesotho and the southern and eastern Free State.
Forecaster Karl Loots says heavy rainfall is expected in the Eastern Cape coastal areas, mainly from East London westwards.
He says from here onwards, much cooler conditions are expected over the next week.
Loots says temperatures will rise, but will not reach 20 degrees before Friday.
