A petition by multiple political parties in the Nelson Mandela Bay to elect a new Executive Mayor, deputy mayor, speaker and chief whip has fallen through the mat.
Thursday's special council meeting was brought to an abrupt end, just minutes in.
This, after Council Speaker, Buyelwa Mafaya, announced that United Front councillor Mkhuseli Mtsila withdraw his signature from a petition to hold the special council.
The petition was brought by the DA, Cope, United Front and ACDP, last month, who said their decision came following a two-month vacuum in the running of the city following the ousting of former bay Mayor, Mongameli Bobani in December.
She said Mtsila's withdrawal meant there were not enough signatures on the petition to continue with the meeting and it was thus illegal.
The UDM's Mongameli Bobani says they have sought legal advice and the meeting will continue as there is a quorum.
