Corrupt former Nelson Mandela Bay traffic officer gets bail

The Nelson Mandela Bay Traffic officer, who was jailed for an effective six years behind bars for corruption, was granted bail after serving just over four months of the sentence.

Mzukisi Mrara's was granted R2000 bail by the city's Commercial Crimes Court after his successful application in the Eastern Cape High Court for leave to appeal both his conviction and sentence.

The 48-year-old's appeal will be heard in January next year.

Mrara and his co-accused, Nosicelo Ncapai, were found guilty of corruption for extorting money from several motorists around Nelson Mandela Bay.

Although the state opposed Mrara's application, Magistrate Hannes Claasen said if two judges of the high court believed that there was a chance of a different outcome then Mramra was entitled to bail.

Ncapai's bail application was also expected to be heard on Friday, however, there was miscommunication between the court and Correctional Services in East London.

She was sentenced to seven years in jail, of which three years were suspended for a period of five years.

Ncapai's application is expected to be heard on the 16th of July.
