The mayor of the Chris Hani District Municipality in the Eastern Cape, Wongama Gela, says he's concerned about the rising number of covid19 positive cases in his district.
This, after 19 people in the Bankies Village in the Emalahleni Municipality, tested positive for the virus, bringing the number of cases in the District to 21.
Mayor Gela says there was a funeral in the village which was attended by more than 50 people who also did not complete an attendance register.
He further stated that on the following day there was another similar ceremony in the same village which people attended.
He says the Provincial Health Department is currently at that village investigating how the rapid spread could have happened and doing tests.
On Monday the Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane called on communities to adhere to lockdown regulations.
His spokesperson Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha said there must be no traditional ceremonies, weddings, religious events, sports activities or any social gatherings taking place during the lockdown with the exception of funerals attended by only 50 people.
He said they were concerned that some members of society in urban and rural communities ignore these regulations by continuing to hold these events and gatherings.
